REdNET update ;record home win win v b -mouth pre atleti at "fortress Anfield"

LIVERPOOL v atleti

wednesday  11 march #20                           Anfield

I am hoping for a "revenge" for my own reasons as much as for the REdS to progress in defence of the European champions trophy (final Istanbul?)

I was at Anfield when Rafa's REdS , got put out of the UEFA cup semis, winning 2-1 , after a 1-0 reverse in madrid , also against atleti (who were much more friendly in those days) his team, which had been plagued by injuries to the few key players that last season before he was forced out by USAcorp yan kers in the boardroom & fan nies who still dont appreciate how intelligent he is....

...  with Hendo fit and, for me, Fab not at his best , I would slightly adjust the very attacking line up I previously proposed, as Hendo, I feel could maintain the midfield pressure needed to overcome a dogged and dirty cheating madrid defence (10 of them?) ... fab bies who think this will be "easy"  need to understand that the home game v barca (4-0) was an "easier" game than this , they will do everything to disrupt the REdS rhythm ...  so .. with AB out,..

NEED 200 % effort , energy and SUPPORT

facts

  •  Liverpool have never lost against atléticoat Anfield in two previous European meetings, drawing 1-1 in the Champions League group stage in 2008-09 and winning 2-1 in the second leg of the Europa League semi-final in 2009-10.
  • In major UEFA European competition, seven of atlético’s 13 away visits to England have ended as draws (W2 D7 L4), with them s unbeaten in their last four matches there (W1 D3) since losing 1-2 to Liverpool in April 2010.
  • On each of the last two occasions Liverpool have lost away from home in the first leg of a Champions League knockout match, they have progressed to the next round; the Reds eliminated chelsea and barcelona in the semi-finals in 2006-07 and 2018-19.
  • atlético have progressed from four of their previous five Champions League knockout ties when winning the first leg, failing only in last season’s last 16 against juventus (2-0 first leg, 0-3 second leg).
  • Jürgen & the REdS team he coaches are yet to lose a home Champions League game with Liverpool (W11 D4); Klopp’s last two home defeats in the competition have been in last 16 home leg matches with dortmund in 2013-14 (1-2 v zenit) and 2014-15 (0-3 v juventus).
  • atlético  have won just one of their last nine away Champions League knockout matches (W1 D2 L6), a 4-2 win at leverkusen in February 2017.
  • Should Liverpool be eliminated , it would be the first time since a run of four seasons between 2004-05 and 2007-08 that the Champions League holders have failed to go beyond the last 16 in consecutive seasons, with r.madrid going out at this stage last season against ajax.?
  • In their 1-0 first leg defeat to Atlético, Liverpool failed to land a single shot on target in a Champions League game for only the second time in 33 matches under Jürgen Klopp (also October 2018 v Napoli).
  • níguez has scored 10 Champions League goals for atlético, one of only two players to do so for the club along with griezmann (21); nine of his 10 goals in the competition have been scored in the first half (90%), the second-highest percentage behind essien (91%, 10/11) of players with at least 10 CL goals.
  • Liverpool forward Bobby Firmino has been directly involved in seven goals in five Champions League knockout appearances at Anfield (3 goals, 4 assists), averaging a goal or assist every 54 minutes.
  • atlético  goalkeeper oblak has conceded just 37 goals in his first 49 Champions League appearances; the record for fewest goals conceded by a goalkeeper in his first 50 appearances is held by dida (35), followed by valdes (38).

Defending European champions Liverpool have endured a "slump " in results of late that (seems to have) started with their 1-0 first-leg loss to atletico  with Premier League and FA Cup defeats following in their next three outings.
The REds then bounced back with a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth at the weekend as they continued their march towards the Premier League title, and  will be aiming to continue the revival by turning things around at Anfield on Wednesday.
Adrian is set to be in the Liverpool goal once again, with Alisson Becker still injured.

All eyes will be on Anfield on Wednesday night as Liverpool look to get the better of atletico and progress to the quarter-final. saul's early goal was the difference in the first leg and while the REdS are fancied given home advantage, the lack of an away goal could put the tie in Atletico's hands.
We're drawn into talk of the 'famous Anfield atmosphere' on European nights, especially after barcelona collapsed last season, but a goal for the visitors puts the home side in a difficult position.atletico MAYbe comfortable out of possession. The first leg saw them post 33% in this area and they still came out with victory. The first-half of that contest ended with the LaLiga side having 29% possession but two shots on target and, crucially, one goal

Mo's 80th goal on his 100th Premier League appearance made him the first Liverpool player since Michael Owen in 2002-03 to score 20-plus goals in three successive seasons while Sadio Mane's coolly-taken effort turned around bournemouth's controversial early lead, given to them by Callum Wilson.
Salah's strike, his 16th in the league this season, also took him past Luis Suarez as the club's leading overseas scorer in the top flight.
The win ended a run of three defeats in four matches in all competitions and was the ideal morale-booster before Wednesday's pivotal Champions League last-16 tie at home to atletico , in which they trail 1-0 after the first leg.
Liverpool's bright start belied their recent difficulties but somehow they still went behind.

There was more than a whiff of a foul when wilson appeared to shove Joe , who he targeted physically all game, but referee Paul Tierney started as he was to go on and allowed play to continue.
That ultimately resulted in lerma crossing for wilson to sidefoot home, and when VAR did not come to Liverpool's salvation Juergen was apoplectic.
It was the fourth time in the last five matches his side had conceded the first goal, having not gone behind in the previous 14 - excluding the youth team's League Cup defeat at Aston Villa.
With an unexpected lead bournemouth sought to capitalise and Nathan Ake's header was pushed onto the crossbar by Adrian.,,,,

Liverpool found a response and turned the match around in an eight-minute spell.
An injury to centre-back cook had a hugely disruptive effect on the visitors as his replacement  simpson was like a rabbit caught in the headlights as he dithered before trying to dribble past MANe just 15 yards outside his own penalty area. who easily nicked the ball, and while his pass to Mo Salah was behind his team-mate and left him with more to do than he would have liked, but Mo quickly recovered control to tuck a shot inside ramsdale's left-hand post.
It was Salah's eighth goal in six appearances against the cherries, scoring in every game, his 14th in as many Premier League matches at Anfield and ended Liverpool's longest goal drought (124 minutes) since February 2019.

Mane put them ahead when Virgil Van Dijk's interception and through-ball sent the unmarked Mane clear  , who bent a shot past ramsdale, and Milly should have made it three but his cushioned shot from Salah's cross carried neither the weight nor direction to trouble the goalkeeper.
Milly's intervention in front of that same goal, albeit in the second half, prevented his side conceding an equaliser as fraser's lob over Adrian was certain to go in until the 34-year-old midfielder, playing at left-back after Robbo was rested as a precaution, raced back to clear two yards out.

With Liverpool only threatening in fits and spurts, Mane's first-time shot from 30 yards deserved a goal but rebounded back off the angle, while ramsdale's fingertips kept out Salah's near-post effort.
Juergen was  furiously jabbing his temples with both index fingers showed how conscious he was of the need to see out the final 10 minutes.three fist pumps to the Kop - and then again to the Main Stand - was a release of his pent-up frustration as much as a celebration.
By contrast bournemouth manager howe trudged down the tunnel after a ninth defeat in 10 away games, a run of just three victories in 18 league matches leaving them stuck in 18th and in real danger of being relegated.
