several changes in the REdS selection (no surprise in that) I wouldnt have played Mane, even though it was remarkable for him to be available after flying back only in the morning from seeing team mate MO Salah win the african player of the year award! it was a real mersey side derby atmosphere, FA cup and night game... with both sets of supporters waking up the rest of Anfield for a change... and a surprise debut for the number 4 shirt (Sami would have been pleased) worn by VVD! battling and a lot of physical challenges, Fat Sam obviously hoping to frustrate Lfc and snatch a result... and after Lalla was brought down Milner made it 1-0 to the home team, a little bit of irony considering how the blues "stole" a point in the recent league game with a debatable Pen!
Lalla and VVD were doing well, Milly too and Robbo very industrious on the left wing and sharp in defence, then a swift breakaway and I dont think Karius could have done much against the only shot the blues had all game, in the corner from Siggi. everton didnt push for a winner, happy to get a draw.. and (as usual late) subs by JK did have a refreshing feel.. Trent & Solanke on. the REds pressed again, and several corners worried the blues defence until VVD got on the end of an OX corner kick, 2-1 , you couldnt make it up! and we were made up.. lovely to see Rooney lose at Anfield and Fat Sam leave with nought, just weird to see Sammy Lee almost fanatical panic when the blues went behind... for me the lad Holgate could could have had a Red card in the first half for excessive violent conduct (think how Mane got a card at citeh) for pushing Firm. with such force that he went into the side wall and over into the stand... "Gerard Houllier used to talk to us a lot in the run-up to the derby about keeping our heads, because at that time Everton were losing a lot of players to red cards when we played them. Especially at Goodison, when their fans got behind them, they could not control themselves most of the time and they normally lost because they had a man sent off or were ill-disciplined.
"It was right for the manager to point that out and make sure that we did not fall into that trap and it is still important now - look what happened to Dejan Lovren when he gave away a penalty in the last derby. That is ill-discipline. You are not getting sent off for it but you are still throwing the points away. n my day, we still had a lot of locally born players like myself, Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard in the side, as well as the foreign lads.
"Most of them were bright and would engage in finding out what the game meant to everyone. The week before would be different and if they did not get it then Carra or Stevie G would be in their ear to make sure they were extra ready. But there was sometimes something positive in a few of the lads not knowing what it meant because they would play more calmly.
"If you don't get the enormity of it, you play your normal game instead of letting the atmosphere get the better of you, being affected by your own nervous energy and making mistakes. You could leave them be - people like Vladimir Smicer and El Hadji Diouf, who were good players on the ball and would hang on to the ball a lot and you would not want them to change that. It was nice to have a mix.

CONTROLLING Rafa (yes him) always worked on strategy, he always talked about controlling the game,I am convinced if Rafa had this squad, and the money Jk has, we would be champions , maybe a couple of times by now... JK does have a plan B, but its still more a case of "lets score more than them" heavy metal, front foot, full throttle... etc.. Even 15/16 year old teens in my youth club team knew when & how to hold the ball and take the sting out of a game, its great to watch when it works... but I dont like other teams (e,g, arsenal) doing an "istanbul" on Lfc, scoring 3 inside 6 mins!) WE DO that, not them!
What is said to the players, really? we wont know probably until one of them (Phil) writes an inevitable book... Pressing is the same as Liverpool teams of Shanks, Paisley, Fagan :hounding; did it many times, especially in Europe where teams were not used to that "pressure" ... Corners? and teams crossing into the box?... ATTACK the ball , for goodness sake, sure have zones and players to mark, but if you go for the ball, they foul you, if they block you, its training, and they have enough time during the week, make them come in for "extra" like school homework! :)
MENTALITY...the key to all success.. Improved, MUCH improved, in narrow wins v leicester & at burnley... not great games, no torrent of goals, but TRUE grit! HOWEVER, aCHTUNG "Der basteln mann" ; DO not, as you seem to do in every single game when Lfc are narrowly ahead, remove a dangerous attacking player replacing with a midfielder or defender in the last 2o mins a) you should know a player needs 30 minutes to show his game. b) IT GIVES THE ENEMY INITIATIVE TO PILE ON THE ATTACK and throw their defenders into the fray, increasing pressure on a (whatever claim you make JK!) a far from solid belief in their own defensive unit... (maybe you would have convinced Phil to stay, if he hadnt seen some of his brilliant footy wasted by a draw, or defeat,,,)
